The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has
threatened to come after employers of labour in Nigeria,
who fail to comply with the Employee’s Compensation Act
of 2010.
This warning was handed down by the Managing Director of
NSITF, Munir Abubakar, at an interactive enlightenment
forum with Nigeria Employers Consultative Association
(NECA) on employees’ compensation in Port Harcourt,
Rivers State.
According to him, all employers of labour are mandated by
the Employee’s Compensation Act to pay one percent of
their gross payroll to NSITF to provide compensation to
employees who suffer from occupational diseases, sustain
injuries or disability from accident at the work place in the
course of employment.
The Director General of NECA, Mr Olusegun Oshinowo,
however told Channels Television that beyond
compensation, premium should also be given to safety and
prevention at the work place.
