Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni,
There was palpable tension at the
National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, on Friday when some hoodlums invaded
the premises, causing fun seekers to run for safety.
The incident, which happened around 5pm,
also caused some of the fun seekers to lose their valuables while
trying to escape from the hoodlums.
Some of the affected fun seekers who
spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria described their experience as
traumatic, noting that there were many pickpockets who moved around the
premises, stealing items from unsuspecting visitors.
A 19-year-old student, Philip Patrick,
who said he came with his siblings to spend the Christmas Day, lamented
the way pickpockets were harassing visitors. He added, “We were having a
picnic and suddenly, we saw people running in different directions. We
also saw a commercial bus speeding around the complex. No one could
explain exactly what was happening but we had to run for safety first.
“One of the pickpockets almost stole my
camera but he returned it immediately I saw his hand coming out of my
pocket. I also saw the same man stealing from other people.”
Also, a teacher, Mrs. Anabel Gbenro,
described the incident as terrifying, adding that security in such
places should be strengthened to protect fun seekers.
She added, “I have come here with my
family to give them a tour of a historic place in our country, but
suddenly we saw people running to different directions. It is annoying
that hoodlums are roaming everywhere, taking items from innocent people
who have come to relax. The security arrangement should be tighter.”
According to the NAN report, the policemen at the Theatre were able to apprehend some of the hoodlums.
