The Rivers state police command has said it
has rescued two citizens who were kidnapped by gunmen in Ogbakiri,
Emohua Local Government Area, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The police command’s public relations officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ahmad Muhammad, said in a statement in Port Harcourt that the rescued victims are Jackson Sunday and Mary Monday.
Muhammad said the rescue operation was carried out by the police command’s special tactical unit at about 4.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to police sources, an Ak-47 assault rifle; one locally made pistol; 20 rounds of ammunition and a Nissan Jeep were recovered from the criminals.
It has now been established that the Nissan Jeep belongs to one of the kidnap victims, Jackson Sunday.
Muhammad said that Sunday and Monday were kidnapped by three hoodlums who were subsequently killed by police officers during the rescue operation.
The police also said that the victims were kidnapped on different days in the Rumuodara and Rumuigbo areas of Port Harcourt respectively.
In another statement, the police command appealed to the public to continue trusting the ability of the police to tackle any given security challenge and to be security conscious given the current unstable situation.
The news comes after the Rivers state police command recently announced that they successfully rescued two other kidnapping victims.
Similarly to today’s case, after the two victims were rescued police found locally made weapons, ammunition, and a car belonging to one of the victims.
However, at this point it is unknown whether the three now deceased miscreants involved in the kidnapping of Sunday and Monday were involved in the incident on December 15.
The police have said that if members of the public come across another kidnapping incident they can call the following police distress lines: 08032003514, 08028915460, 08028915462, and 08160723892.
